Default Things to do on a Sunday afternoon...

Let's see...

Go to town's bicentennial celebration, see a bunch of historical displays and meet a lot of people.

Go to local town's civil war "fort" and museum, to watch reenactors do a display with cannons.

Get talked into helping out as they were short people for the afternoon show; wind up borrowing gear and get to fire cannon.

REALLY enjoy firing cannon; consider adding new hobby to list of things to do on other Sundays...

And last but not least, it appears the Confederacy is really scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point in the war...

I gotta say, though, this is definitely the biggest thing I have ever shot, and it was a hoot to shoot! I can see why you guys get into them. Only thing is, it seems like a hot air balloon in the sense that in order to play with your toys, you need a LOT of people to join in, to make it work. These guys had 4 cannon there, and said their group is getting two more, so they need more people to join in. And there IS something to be said for getting to "play" with someone else's dime. The clothes and gear are a good bit cheaper than the big guns. I figure I'd need the uniform, and possibly a decent rifle to go with my 1860 Colt Army brass cap-and-ball revolver that I already have, and I could add on as I go. And yes, in time, I may have to try and get one of these of my own. The ultimate "home defense" weapon; guarenteed to stop any home that attacks you.

I'm reenactor myself. Its a bug that can bite you as bad or worse than the gun bug. Go for it, I havent regretted a single purchase or moment. I've been reenacting for the last 15 years. I did 7 years of confederate civil war. Now I do Brittish revolutionary war.(theres a losing theme here)

Default Shootin' cannons

If you're interested in shooting canons loaded with projectiles and not just blanks, you should consider joining N-SSA http://www.n-ssa.net/

Depending on your location in Tenn, check out either the Carolina or Deep South regions (Use Regions tab on home page).

We shoot civil war muskets, revolvers, carbines, smoothbores, mortars, and cannons. All shooting is competative as individuals or as teams. We'll be shooting this weekend just north of Charlotte NC if you're interested (pm me).

Default ..join the SCV..

I urge all patriots who even think they have a Civil War vet (OK...OK...War between the States/War of Northern Aggression) in the family...to join the SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans). The 150th. Anniversary is coming up (2011) of the start of the War. Remember and honor your heritage...and never forget that the South fought for freedom from government tyranny...not for slavery. We are fighting this fight today with our leader(?)...for the same reasons they fought. Lest we forget....

Well, it's not a cannon and only a mortar but it also produces a lot of fire and smoke. Shoots 2-inch concrete filled projectiles.
