This from one of our members: As an old armorer for the Army National Guard from the 1960s I would never have attempted to disassemble or assemble a driving rod spring with a simple screwdriver. The method we used was to obtain a hard wood block, drill a hole of appropriate size for the driving rod to fit through and drive a nail into the block so that it crossed the center of the hole. When assembling or disassembling the driving rod the rear of the bolt was always back side down into the block. Another method was to obtain an over size screwdriver and cut a notch in the center for the rod to fit in. The sides of the notch would keep the rod from slipping off. The wood block was always the preferred method and I believe it was shown in the TM's of that period. [Editor's note: Thanks for that tip!]
